GETTING READY

One number, three faces

One number wearing three faces. A turn at the table. A little practice.

About 12–18 minutes together. Bring sixteen similar counters, number cards 0–10, word cards for four and nine, and three trays or drawn areas. Keep four counters covered to start; the other twelve are the pot.

For the grown-up · Building a set from a mark is taught at the table, not on screen. You read every word card aloud, as often as asked — no reading or numeral writing is required of your child. Printing is optional; hand-written cards work just as well.

Grown-up help

In make-the-set items the app voices each tap, so practice here is rehearsal of stopping at the target. Your child’s own counting and set-building evidence lives at the table, on your paper card.

  • Builds a set from a numeral (9): counts out and stops at the card’s number, and checks it themselves.
  • Matches numeral to set (4, 9): chooses by counting or by knowing the mark — and the choice survives a shuffle.
  • Connects the spoken word face: places the word card you read aloud with the right set.
  • Spoken “six” transfer: builds exactly six and can show the count that stopped there.

Mark each row independent / supported / revisit / uncertain. Leave anything you did not observe uncertain. Nothing is scored or stored.

Your child decides when a set is finished — the app never stops a build for them, and never adds or removes a counter itself. If the tray does not match, they can take more from the pot or put counters back, as often as they like. The pot always keeps spare counters, so it cannot give the answer away. Five practice items, at most two extras.

Tapping What does this mark say? speaks the numeral’s name. That is the same help you would give at the table if asked — record it as supported. The app never names a mark your child is choosing between.
