BRIJBOX · SEEING SMALL GROUPS · MATCHING CARDS

Same number. Different picture.

Cut out the ten cards. Lay them face up and find pairs with the same number of dots. Check by counting if useful. Mix and play again, or use the cards for a quick-look game. No printer? Make the groups with five counters.

Two cards for each quantity, one to five. Matching is practice; it does not by itself show quick recognition or finger transfer.

BRIJBOX · SEEING SMALL GROUPS · GROWN-UP GUIDE

Make it. Hide it. Check it.

Five similar counters, a cloth and your hands. App 2-3 min → table 6-8 min → app practice 2-3 min. These are estimates, not deadlines. The same cloth game and cards work as the no-device fallback.

  1. Your child makes; you guess. Hide a group of two to five counters. Take a quick look, guess, then let your child uncover and check you. Play two or three rounds. Get one wrong on purpose.
  2. Swap roles. Make groups of one, three, four and five for your child to guess. Uncover after each guess. A longer look or counting is fine. For four or five, ask: “How did you see it?”
  3. Move the same four. Keep them visible as you rearrange. “Still the same number? How do you know?” Accept a reason or a recount.
  4. Put the counters away. Use fingers. “Show me three. Now three a different way.” Repeat for five. If fingers are difficult to move, use counters on two drawn hand outlines.
  5. Come back together when ready. It is fine to stop early. The app cannot tell which table activities you did.

What did you notice?

Observe guesses before revealing the answer. A self-requested second peek can be independent. Copying a spoken count is checking, not fresh quick recognition. Making groups alone does not establish quick recognition. Counting is always welcome.

Mark each row: independent / supported / revisit / uncertain. Leave unobserved rows uncertain.
